Kimchi Chocolate (김치 초콜렛)

Loading ... Loading ...

We already know what you are thinking, kimchi and chocolate…really? While shopping in Insadong recently we came across perhaps one of the best novelties to send back home, kimchi flavored chocolates. It seems to combine what is most famous in Korea, the ever-present kimchi dish, and what we all love, chocolate.

Kimchi is traditionally served as banchan and is available with any meal you get in Korea. This fermented cabbage dish carries a sometimes bitter taste depending on the style you eat. Kimchi comes in SO many forms. The Korean Food Academy has categorized over 100 types of kimchi from kkakdugi (깍두기), small squares of radish, to baechu kimchi (배추 김치) , salted cabbage leaves. One that is not listed with The Academy is kimchi chocolate.

The quality of chocolate is on par with competitors and has a very smooth consistency. The inside is an oozing kimchi flavored filling. The flavor is subtle up front with a hint of kimchi flavor, then POW! The spicy aftertaste and flavor of kimchi take over your taste buds sending them into a frenzy. The conclusion? It’s not bad. Unique things such as these are always a good idea to try and can be fun to eat. Not sure if next time we have dessert we will pass up on ice cream and opt for these chocolate morsels, but we’re happy that we tried it.

*suspicious look* I saw this at the airport, lotte world etc and was so tempted to buy it back home as a souvenir but not sure how the rest would take to it and so didn’t get it in the end. Does it HONESTLY taste decent? hahaha I love kimchi (the savoury garlicky kind) and chocolate.. but the two together? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

The chocolate is more of a novelty than buying it for the actual taste. It makes a great souvenir, you should definitely send it home for everyone to try.
